You can see all of the different colors, traditionally all of these colors were found in the Hakone region but it has been declared a national forest so some of them have to be imported. The craftsman cuts the wood into very small pieces and glues them together into the design he wants. He wraps them with string to keep them together.
He is showing a bowl that he has made the block of wood on the bottom left is what the bowl started out as, pretty amazing!
And this is a picture that his brother does, and yes it is all wood even the little whiskers and the name! It takes about 2 months to complete one of these pictures and then he takes a large plane and takes off a very thin piece and that is what they sell. I think they said you can get 50 copies from one original.
After Hakone we spent a good part of the day traveling to Kanazawa. We first traveled by bullet train for about 2 hours which was a lot of fun, I can't remember how fast it goes something like 180 miles an hour when they aren't in town. Then we went to a local express train which took about 2 more hours. Finally we arrived in Kanazawa and were able to see the old samurai district.
I can't remember how old the streets are but they are only big enough for one car to go through!

The garden was amazing, it is designed to be seen from the house from all the different views. And they don't have to water at all and I just wish I could have a garden like that!
